Job Summary
Job Summary
This position will plan, implement and coordinate communication strategies for health improvement efforts carried out through the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) and other grants associated with the Office of Statewide Health Improvement Initiatives (OSHII). The incumbent will develop and lead the communications plan for OSHII, focusing on policy and systems and environmental change initiatives that address the leading causes of chronic disease.
Responsibilities include: coordination of communications strategies within OSHII (focusing on content areas related to physical activity and healthy eating and the evaluation of those areas); management of media requests; development of legislative and other programmatic & evaluation reports, fact sheets, news releases, multi-media presentations, website content, and displays; collaboration with other MDH divisions, external advocacy groups and community groups to assure coordinated and consistent messaging around priority health improvement initiatives; providing training and communications capacity building support to local and tribal public health staff; developing and coordinating communications related technical assistance to local and tribal public health staff; and ensuring regular and responsive communications internally with MDH staff and externally with media, community partners, and the public.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Three years of professional Communications experience in Public Health, Public Policy, or a related field.
Previous experience must include the following to be considered:

  • Creating and developing culturally relevant communications materials while utilizing appropriate and multiple media platforms to reach diverse communities
  • Preparing and providing guidance on best communications practices for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Implementation and collaboration of communication strategies with co-workers.

Preferred Qualifications
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge of effective media relations strategies and media advocacy techniques and methods.
Knowledge of principles and practices for planning, composing and editing various communication vehicles, utilizing a variety of writing styles.
Knowledge of individual and public health issues, and ability to identify sources of health information and resources.
Web design and content preparation sufficient to plan, organize, and create effective web pages for general and professional audiences and the ability to coordinate projects with application developers and/or web programmers.
The theories, principles, and practice of public health and policy, systems and environmental change strategies for population-level health improvement.
Ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse populations and apply cultural capacity in all interactions and activities.
Knowledge of the statewide community health services system and health promotions programs.
MDH organizational structure, methods and procedures, departmental decision-making processes and policies sufficient to expedite complicated projects and communicate appropriately with clients.
