Job Summary

The Environmental Laboratory Section of the Minnesota Department of Health, Public Health Laboratory Division is seeking a supervisor for the Biomonitoring and Emerging Contaminants (BEC) Unit. The BEC Unit is responsible for providing analytical testing of clinical specimens for biomonitoring studies, testing human biological or environmental matrices to support chemical emergency response efforts, and testing for chemicals of emerging concern in water and other environmental matrices. The principal responsibilities of this position include managing multiple projects and budgets, ensuring testing meets CLIA and other applicable regulatory compliance, and supervising the personnel of the BEC Unit. This position will work to cultivate an inclusive work environment for all, with respect to diversity and equity.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in chemistry, physical, natural, or biological sciences.


Two years of professional or supervisory experience in conducting laboratory analyses in an analytical or research program in environmental chemistry, organic chemistry or clinical chemistry.

Previous experience below is required to be considered a candidate and will be assessed during the interview process:

Knowledge of:

• Scientific, experimental and research techniques and principles

• Procedures involved in planning, executing, evaluating and reporting analytical chemistry data

Ability to:

• Organize, execute and evaluate research activities independently and to correlate findings from a variety of scientific disciplines.

• Prepare and review reports and papers on the results of research projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in chemistry, physical, natural, or biological sciences

• Experience with quality assurance programs such as CLIA and/or ISO 17025

• Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems

• Two years of experience supervising or coordinating a team

• Communication skills sufficient to organize and synthesize material from diverse sources clearly and effectively

• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks

• Ability to prepare and make effective oral and written presentations

• Ability to collaborate in writing the results of research projects

• Demonstrated ability to provide training for other laboratory employees, students, or other trainees, to support a collaborative team environment.
